Edict 246: Bosch was summoned by edict after failed notice

Overview
On June 21, 2024, the Sixteenth Civil Court of the First Judicial Circuit of Panama issued Edict No. 246 summoning Juan Luis Bosch Gutiérrez to appear through counsel within 20 days to respond to Lisa, S.A.’s summary accounting lawsuit. The edict was published in La Estrella de Panamá on July 9, 2024, after international notification attempts failed. In accordance with Article 1012 of the Judicial Code, the court may appoint a default defender if Bosch fails to appear.
The edict orders Bosch, a Guatemalan national, to appear and defend against allegations that he withheld and failed to account for over $44.9 million in dividends owed to Lisa, S.A. The publication of the edict fulfills Panama’s legal substitute notification procedure, allowing the case to move forward in Bosch’s absence if necessary.
